Heat Pump Repair in San Antonio

Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Professional Diagnosis

Heat pump symptoms can have several possible causes. Replacing a part without diagnosing the system may leave the underlying issue unresolved. We handle common repair calls involving short cycling, refrigerant loss, clogged condensate drain lines, and worn capacitors or contactors.

Arrange an inspection when you notice:

• Heating or cooling mode problems: A system that doesn’t switch correctly between modes may have a reversing valve, refrigerant, electrical control, or control-system issue.
• Repeated short cycling: A heat pump that starts and stops in brief intervals places added strain on its components and requires diagnosis.
• Ice on the outdoor unit: Defrost-system problems can allow frost or ice to accumulate and reduce heating performance.
• Drainage problems: A clogged condensate drain line can interfere with normal moisture removal and requires service.
• Electrical or starting trouble: Worn capacitors and contactors can affect how the equipment starts, runs, or responds to thermostat commands.
• Declining performance: Refrigerant loss or another fault may cause weak heating, weak cooling, or extended operating cycles.

These symptoms don’t identify a specific failed part. Our technicians assess residential heat pumps and packaged systems, identify the source of the problem, and complete the confirmed repair.

When to Repair or Replace a Heat Pump

A repair addresses a diagnosed component failure or maintenance problem. Examples include replacing a failed capacitor, clearing a condensate drain line, or correcting a control issue after confirming the cause.

Replacement may be appropriate when the equipment’s overall condition and the scope of the necessary work make continued repairs impractical. We inspect the equipment before recommending repair or replacement.

San Antonio Mechanical Permit Requirements

Routine work such as capacitor replacement or a heat pump tune-up typically doesn’t require a City of San Antonio permit. Full heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment replacement or a new installation generally requires a mechanical permit. The city lists heat pumps as a separate equipment category within its mechanical permitting requirements.

For eligible residential air conditioning replacements on existing electric mechanical systems, the City of San Antonio Limited Service Repair permit process allows a licensed contractor to complete the work and file the formal permit within three business days after completion. Eligibility depends on the equipment and project scope. We can determine whether planned work is a routine repair or a replacement that generally requires permitting.
